First 15/5
January 26, 2016

This week from a project standpoint I was and am focused on figuring out what to use to do a storyboard. I've used several methods in the past but none that I really love. So I'm going to try and figure out something new to try for this project.  Other than that, feeling good about the project from a client perspective, a needs perspective and an ability to deliver perspective.  Read the background information provided so far on the project and the content.   I am very excited to work on it!

Cheri's 15/5's

A 15/5 is a short progress report.  Taking about fifteen minutes to write and five minutes to read it keeps everyone up to date on the weekly going's on with the project.  These reports will be written both for team progress and for individual progress.  Check out the team members' pages for their individual 15/5 reports.

Second 15/5

February 2, 2016

This week was focused on reviewing steps and approaches to developing an education project in order
to make sure I’m thinking about the right things and have the necessary information to begin effective
storyboarding for our project. I think we still have a few things to decide and do before storyboarding
can begin. I do also continue to research storyboarding options although I haven’t necessarily found
anything better than what I’ve used in the past. In addition, need to keep in mind that the whole team
will need access to review and provide feedback so that is a consideration as well when deciding on
software to use (i.e. can’t use a software that the team doesn’t have or can’t open).  Didn’t spend as
much time as this project this week as last since much of the time this week went to 7350 project
instead.  Will need to figure out how best to manage my time between both projects since my roles for
both are very heavy for upfront engagement.  Means the backend of my semester will hopefully be
lighter.

Third 15/5

February 9, 2016

This week was a whirlwind of activity but not a lot of it around the actual project for 6210.  The team’s focus this week was the Task Analysis.  This is really a dependency/input for the storyboard.  In addition to discussing and reviewing the task analysis, I focused on the timeline.  This is the next deliverable that is due and can be put together somewhat independently of the task analysis.  Utilizing past timelines, examples from the class and examples I found online to put the draft of this together.

It was good to get back into Storyline to work on the Zoom challenge. It feels like a long time since I’ve used it so I enjoyed getting in there if even just for a short time.

Fourth 15/5

February 16, 2016

This week was heavily focused on developing the timeline and figuring out hardware and software requirements.  For the timeline, I used the examples as well as previous project timelines to put together a draft for this project for the team to review.  Similarly for the requirements, I utilized the examples as well as the Articulate website, past experience and general knowledge.  The examples varied widely and neither was quite what we ended up with but they did provide good ideas.

The upcoming week will be strongly focused on beginning the Flow Charts and Storyboarding now that the Content and Task Analysis is mostly complete and the learner profile, instructional model document, etc. are well on their way. I’m excited to get going on this and hope that what I put together is helpful to the development of the actual product as well as meets the expectations of the client, the team and Dr. Clinton.  Looking back, I probably should have been more heavily involved in some of the analysis that took place but when trying to spread work around it is hard for some to not do anything while others are doing something. I am confident that I can utilize the analysis and other documents as needed but feel like that may have fallen under the designer title I hold.  Oh well, lesson learned for next time.

Fifth 15/5

February 23, 2016

This week I spent a lot of time creating the flowchart and working on the storyboard.  I am somewhat familiar with Visio and flowcharts so looking at the examples provided and another example got me off and running.  I did realize there were some assumptions I was making in order to develop the flow so when the team meets this week I will need to confirm those.  Easy enough to adjust the chart based on the decisions though (such as if we give users a choice to take only certain lessons or in their own order).

Initially I was leaning toward using storbyoardthat.com as a way to do the storyboard.  Looks user friendly and thought it might be fun to use something different than PowerPoint.  However, I then took a great course on Lynda.com that explain when to use different types of storyboards.  That helped me decide on the format I am recommending to the team and it is PowerPoint since we were provided a PowerPoint template for look and feel by the client.  Once we finalize the format, I pulled together the content to present and the order to follow the objectives and flowchart so it is ready to be put into the actual storyboard. As I do that, I will keep in mind interactions and our instructional methods to make sure I am adhering to best practices.  Things feel like they are starting to come together!

Sixth 15/5

March 1, 2016

A very busy week this week.  I completed the draft of the storyboard.  The Lynda.com course on storyboarding listed out when you might use one type of storyboarding (i.e. text, visual or prototype) versus others and

based on the below, we decided to go with text based:

  • A different resource for graphics and graphics design

  • Visual look has already been established – i.e. have slide template

  • Reviewers are tech challenged or pressed for time

I did however like the PowerPoint template better than the word template so took that and modified to make it fit with a text-based storyboard.  Then took the needs assessment, tasks and learning objectives, content and flowchart and created storyboards for the five lessons.  Made sure that the content we need to cover in order to meet objectives was indeed covered.  Then took the treatment rationale and instructional model information as well as gathered best practice list and worked on presentation elements and interactions.

The end result is an outline of content and audio along with an interaction every 3-5 slides as well as interactive assessments for each lesson (the lessons are pretty short for didn’t need assessments throughout lesson).  It does not indicate the look and feel of all of the elements or how to implement the content but it does provide what needs to be discussed when as well as suggested ways to present the information including interactions. Looking to our graphic designer/programmer and audio owner to take that and figure out best way to implement it.  Feels good to have that completed!

Seventh 15/5

March 8, 2016

This week was focused mostly on reviewing deliverables that others on the team have worked on. Luckily everyone on the team is strong so reviewing isn't too strenuous.  I also spent some time working on tweaks to the treatment rationale to put more of the rationale focus on our specific module and why we chose to go the direction we have chosen to go with it.  Because the rationale was an important input into the flow charts and storyboards it was mostly a matter of going back and making sure our thoughts were properly documented in the rationale description.

Eighth 15/5

March 15, 2016

Spring Break - no project work to report on.

08

Ninth 15/5

March 22, 2016

Now that the storyboards are complete, my tasks for the actual project have lightened up momentarily.  I’m sure once we get to the final presentation and final documents the pace will pick up again. This week was focused on reviewing the prototype and then working on the additional tasks outside the core project such as the first year student presentation, the article summary and the desk crits. Enjoyed seeing the other projects. Really amazing how good they are and how far the group has come in the past year!!

Tenth 15/5

March 29, 2016

This week was light for me as far as this project.  There was discussion on a couple of the objectives and
the content needed to meet those objectives. After Tracy and Nora acted as SMEs to get more
information, I updated the storyboard with visual and audio to reflect the changes to the content and to
make the presentation of that content more in line with how other content is being presented
throughout our module.   Other than that, we are kind of ahead of our project and just waited for the
next draft of the prototype that includes audio to do another review.

Eleventh 15/5

April 5, 2016

My activity for this project was focused on reviewing and testing this week.  As the prototype gets closer to its final state and the final project documentation is completed, there is a fair amount of reviewing and testing to do across all of those areas.  The good news is that this team is very strong with both the actual product and the documentation surrounding it so it is usually more a matter of small tweaks versus significant changes.  The product is really coming along and looking good!

Twelfth 15/5

April 11, 2016

This past week I spent time creating the slides for our second desk crit coming up on Wednesday.  In addition, continue to review the prototype as changes are made there.  Looking forward to our final feedback pieces – i.e. beta test results and desk crits so we can finalize everything.

12

Thirteenth 15/5

April 18, 2016

So this week I didn’t really do much for this class or project.  Now that we are fully in the beta testing phase most of the work to do falls to Lana, Megan and/or Nora. In addition, Tracy is hard at work on the documentation.  I continue to review items as feasible. Even there though between the alpha test, the expert review and the reviews by other team members, I’m not seeing much that hasn’t already been found.  Everything is really coming together and looking good.
