Great job so far on the project!  I like the look and feel of the module so far, and I think this is a great instructional opportunity that could make a big impact in all classrooms - a rare opportunity in education!  As module development progresses, I would recommend the use of more scenario-style prompts incorporating a range of content areas to make potential decisions even more relevant to the users.

Writing Assessments to Validate the Impact of Learning, Part 2

Assessments are vital parts of the learning process, and can affirm a learner’s progress as he or she encounters, struggles with, and learns to apply information.  Assessment questions vary in depths of knowledge tested, but if written in an approachable and effective manner, assessment questions help the learner visualize the application of knowledge and connect concepts from content learned.  Assessments also provide data, which is necessary in strategizing and assessing learning.  While assessments can detract from the learning process if written ineffectively or containing irrelevant content, they can also push a learner forward in their understanding of the content and their abilities to apply information in achieving a goal or completing a task.

 

SCORM & Tin Can Summary

 

               SCORM and Tin Can are both tools used to collect data on e-learning participation and display the data so users can monitor progress and completion of assignments.  SCORM is universally and traditionally used throughout online learning communities.  While it has been essential in the context of e-learning to assess users and report the results of those assessments to professors and learning coordinators, it provides a somewhat limited amount of information – what I would consider black-and-white data.  By reporting how many correct responses a user supplied, SCORM provides valuable – but limited – information.

 

               Tin Can, as described by the Brightwave Group, seeks to revolutionize the data professors and learning coordinators receive in their assessment of learning.  While SCORM users examine the right or wrong responses to modules and assessments, Tin Can offers additional data to signify the relationship of the learners and their interaction and reception of the e-learning content.  Tin Can emphasizes self-evaluation and participation as a part of assessing how thoroughly the learners interact with the content.  Rather than only allowing professors and learning coordinators to only view individual assessment results, this allows them to consider the whole student and their progress in a course.  Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the program focuses on the value of informal and collaborative learning – essential methods that e-learning programs often leave by the wayside.  While independence and self-motivation play a huge role in successful e-learning, informal and collaborative learning opportunities presented through message boards and group meeting spaces have the potential to play an even more significant role in enabling students to more effectively and actively learn in an online environment.

Tips & Tricks for Recording Audio

When it comes to recording audio, I've experienced a number of the challenges described in this week's article.  I especially liked the suggestions for how to tackle ambient noises.  Investing in a microphone seems to be the first step in securing quality audio recording.  I especially thought the trick of using an old lamp stand as a boom.  But I think it's also important to follow the tip to record non-narration audio first to be able to identify environmental factors that may produce extraneous background noise.  From there, I can see how it would be easier to identify which noises to listen for and edit. 

 

I also liked the universal suggestion of covering ambient noises with a light soundtrack.  I find this to be a useful tip in both the production of a quality experience for the user and as a way to effectively save time in audio editing.  I think it is important to consider though how much a soundtrack may deter from the information being conveyed through audio narration.  From past readings and experiences, critics may suggest against background music, which may actually be more distracting than light and infrequent ambient noises.

The module looks great so far and I think the screenshots and magnification slide will be very helpful in teaching the employees about the new system. One obstacle that was mentioned in your presentation is the attitude of the employees. I think gauging change in attitude through a survey could be an interesting part of your evaluation. Having your beta testers answer a few questions or respond to statements regarding their openness to the new process before and after viewing the module could be a way of evaluating how well the module works in preparing them for the changes in procedure. Good job so far!

Gagne Style Desk Crit #2

 

Great job on your module!  I think the straight-forward design is accessible and user-friendly.  I also like how specific examples and screenshots are included throughout - making this a very helpful tool for an employee learning how to use the new system.  While I think the focus on the specific examples and screenshots is essential in assisting the users to achieve designated learning goals, it may also be necessary to add slides with bullet points to reinforce the audio through text.  If this solution interferes with the design and the over-all aesthetic of the presentation, I would also suggest including a Notes tab in the Menu that contains a script; this solution would also make this module 508 compliant.

This module is looking great!  I enjoy the simple but engaging design, and I think the animations and movements are not distracting but add a bit of interest to an otherwise straight-forward design.  I also want to compliment the content of this module in that I think your team did a wonderful job of creating essential learning objectives from a wide-ranging skill set.  While there are many important lessons and tips presented, it is still a manageable amount of information for users and I can see how helpful this will be to the faculty as they move towards more video-based assignments.  Lastly, I would suggest the inclusion of an audio track to make this module 508 compliant.  The text and images are detailed and helpful, but I think the user should also have the option of an audio narration track.
